ఇది కొంత పాత జోకే. ఇంగ్లీషు వాళ్ళ కాలం లో ఒక కొర్టు లో ఏదొ ఒక కేసులో వాదొపవాదాలు గంటల తరబడి జరుగుతున్నాయి. కొంతసేపటికి విసుగెత్తిన జడ్జీ గారు ప్రతివాది లాయరు తో " అయ్యా ఇందాకటినించి మీరు మాట్లాడుతున్నదంతా నా కుడి చెవిలోంచి లొపలకి వెల్లి ఎడమ చెవి లోంచి బయటకి వచ్చేస్తోంది " అని హాస్యమాడారు. దానికి లాయరు గారు ఊరుకుంటారా ." చిత్తం. అందుకే మీ ముందున్న జడ్జీ గారు ఒక చెవి లో పెన్సిలు పెట్టుకునే వారు" అని సెలవిచ్చారు

నిన్నటి సందెశం లో ఉద్దేశపూర్వం గానే ఒక మహా మనీషి ని పేర్కోడం మానాను. ఆచార్య రోణంకి అప్పలస్వామి గారిది మాటల కందే వ్యక్తిత్వం కాదు. ఒక మనిషికి అంత పాండిత్యం ఉండడం సాధ్యమేనా అని మా సహోధ్యాయులం ఆశ్చర్యపోయిన సందర్భాలు అనేకం. ఆయన కావడానికి మా యింగ్లీషు లెక్చరర్ .కాని క్లాసు లో మాకు ఆయన గీత గోవిందాన్నీ పథాభి పంచాంగాన్నీ ఫిడేలు రాగాలు డజన్ నీ ఆరుద్ర త్వమేవాహాన్నీ వినిపించి తన్మయుల్ని చేసిన సందర్భాలు అనుభవైకవేద్యాలు. మాక్ బెత్ నాటకాన్నీ మిల్ టన్ పారడైస్ లాస్ట్ నీ ఆయన బోధించిన విధానం జన్మ జన్మ లకీ మా మనొఫలకాల మీద ఆ సాహిత్యం ముద్రించుకుపోయేలా చేసింది. యెంతదాకా అంటే చెపుతా ఆ బియెస్సీ యెం ఆర్ కాలేజి అంతా అయి పోయిన దశాబ్దాల తర్వాత నేను పూర్తిగా ఫిజిక్సూ ఇన్ స్త్రుమెంటేషనూ లో మునిగి తేలుతున్నా ఒక కాలేజ్ కి ఇంటర్వ్యూ కమిటీ లో కూర్చుని ఒక యింగ్లీషు లెక్చరర్ ఉద్యోగానికి వచ్చిన అతనికి లార్డ్ అఫ్ ది ఫ్లైస్ అంతే బీల్ జి బబ్ అని గుర్తు చేసేంత .ఆ కాలేజి ప్రిన్సిపాల్ అప్పలస్వామి గారి కుమారుడే అవడం కొసమెరుపు అప్పలస్వామి గారు నాకు వ్యక్తిగతం గా నేర్పిన విషయాలు మరొసారి.కానీ ఆయనకి మాకియవెల్లి రాజనీతి శాస్త్రాన్ని తెలుగు లోకి అనువదించినందుకు కేంద్ర సాహిత్య అకాడమీ అవార్డ్ వచ్చిన సంగతి గుర్తు చేసుకోడం బాధ్యత

మనసు కాంతి కన్నా వేగం గానూ కాలం కన్నా హుషారు గానూ పరిగెడుతుంది. ఈ మధ్యలో టెన్నిస్ మాచ్ ల గురించి రాస్తున్నప్పుదు ఆ ఆటల్లొ మా మాస్టారులు కూడా రావడం అందరమూ కలిసే కాలెజికి వెళ్ళడం గుర్తుకొచ్చాయి . నిజంగా నేనింతవాణ్ణి [ఎంత వాణ్ణయితే అంతవాణ్ణే ] అవడానికి నాకు పాఠాలు నేర్పిన వాళ్ళందరూ ఎంత చేయూత నిచ్చారో చెప్పడం చాలా కష్ఠం కే రామదాసు గారు టీవీఎల్ నరసిం హం గారు గొదావరిరాజు గారు పేరిశాస్త్రి గారు ఎం ఎస్ ఆర్ కే శాస్త్రి గారు వేటూరి రామక్రిష్ణరావు గారు యిలా ఎంత మందని గౌరవాన్ని అదిగి తెచ్చుకొనక్కరలేదని వాళ్ళందరూ నాకు చూపించారు . అదే నా ఉపాధ్యాయ జీవితం లో బాగా అక్కరకు వచ్చిన సత్యం

టెన్నిస్ పోటీల మాట వచ్చింది కాబట్టి మరొ సరదా మాట .ఈ పోటీలు మామూలుగా ఫిబ్రవరిలొ జరిగేవి. ఎండ బాగానే వుండేది. ఈ పొటీలకి విజయనగరం లో అన్ని వర్గాల నించీ ప్రెక్షకులు వచ్చెవాళ్ళు . వారిలో హరిదాసు ఆకెళ్ళ అప్పారావు కూడా వకరు ఒక రొజు ఉదయం ఎండలో ఆయన గొదుగు వేసుకుని మాచ్ చూస్తున్నారు. గాలరీలో క్రింద వరసలొ కూర్చున్న మా శాస్త్రి అయ్యా అప్పారావు గారూ కాస్త ఆ గొవర్థనం కిందకి దించండి అని అరిచాదు. జనం ముసిముసి నవ్వులు చిందించారు హై హాయ్ ల మధ్య ఆ అచ్చ తెలుగు నుడికారం విని ఎన్నాళ్ళయిందో

అరవయ్యవ దశకంలొ విజయనగరం సిటీక్లబ్ లొ టెన్నిస్ పోటీలుచాలా బాగా జరిగేవి.కృష్ణన్, లాల్, ముఖర్జీ నస్తత్సె వంటి ఆటగాళ్ళని చూసే అవకాశం ఆ చిన్న వూళ్ళ్లో కలిగిందంటే నారాయణరావుదొర గారిని మరీమరీ తలచుకోవాలి.ఆటచూసి వెన్లక్ లైబ్రరీ పార్క్ లో గడ్డి మీద కూర్చుని గప్పాలు కొట్టడం ఒక మంచి అనుభూతి ఆ రొజుల్లొనె న్యూ పూర్ణా హాలులో దిల్ తేరా దీవానా సినిమా రిలీజయింది ఆరొజు మాచ్ చూసి సినిమా కి వచ్చాం . ప్రేంజిత్ లాలూ జైదీప్ ముఖర్జీ హాలు బైట తచ్చాడుతున్నారు .హౌస్ ఫుల్ బోర్దుచూసి సంగతి అర్ధమయింది. మా దగ్గర 60 పైసల టిక్కెట్లు వున్నై . వస్తారా అని అడిగితే మహా సంతోషం గా వచ్చి మాతో పాటు వేరుశనగపప్పులు తింటూ ఎంజాయ్ చేశారు. నిజం గానే వాళ్ళు కావాలంటే హాలు వారు టిక్కెట్ ఇవ్వరా మర్యాదలు చెయ్యరా భేషజాలు లేని ఆ మనుషులు వేరు. ఆరోజులూ వేరే

looking back

when i look back i really wonder. how far have we travelled? i vividly remember. i was in the 2nd form those days--equivalent to the seventh class of now-, aged 8 or nine. there was a smallpox epidemic in vizianagaram. in the day time there were huge rallies to the gramadevata temple. small pox is known as ammavaaru ofcourse. in the night the muslims were roaming in groups shouting loudly and marking all the houses with their palm prints in saffron colour. all thix to ward off the dreaded desease. medicines were frowned upon. schools also were closed for some days. when they reopened we went back to school only to find some of the seats in the classroom empty. can my children and grand children imagine such things happened? india progressed a great deal did it? i some times wonder. i actually know of instances when the dates for an international scientific conference were fixed after consulting the panchangam and an astrologer. well it takes all kinds to make the world

one person who deeply impressed me was abu abraham ,the cartoonist.my interaction with him was for a few hours only.the year was 1976. he came to visakhapatnam to cover the science congress. indira gandhi inagurated it. it was the height of emergency. the level of security was never seen in andhra university. we were barred from going near our daily haunts. i also remember the occassion for our first taste of satellite television. me and my friend bhaskar were assigned to keep mr abu abraham company for the one day he stayed in vizag.we were awe struck being so near a personality whom we adored.conversation--what can i say ? we managed to mumble some platitudes and inanities about the lectures we heard . most of them were about the garibi of bharat and what was being or to be done.abu smiled and asked us whether we really thought india is poor. how can someone ask even. the whole world knows that. he said the whole world wants you to believe that. dont go by the gdp comparisons. see what that amount buys. 10 rupees in india can buy alot more than what a dollar can in india. what does a spare meal cost? pao bhaji for example. those words changed the way we looked at our poverty forever. i am reminded of this incident now because recently i saw a news item on how india is a very costly place. the comparison was the price of a mcdonald burger in the U.S. and in india. who cares for mcdonalds in india except for fattened calves

ఎప్పుడో దాదాపు నలభై సంవత్సరాల క్రితం ఆంధ్రా యూనివర్సిటీ విద్యార్ధులు యువజనోత్సవాలలో పాడడం కోసం నేనుఒక పాట రాశాను. మిత్రుడు ప్రభాకరరావూ నేనూ కలిసి వరస కట్టాం ఆ పాటని ఈ తరం యువతీ యువకులు పాదుతా తీయగా సరిగమప వంటి కార్యక్రమాలలో పాదుతుంటే మజా వస్తోంది ఊగి పొతున్నదీ సాగిపొతున్నదీ ఉయ్యాలగా పడవ వయ్యారి పడవ అని మొదలవుతుందా పాట నెమ్మది గా గుర్తు తెచ్చుకుని మొత్తం ఇక్కడ రాస్తాను ఎవరికైనా గుర్తు వస్తే నాకూ గుర్తు చెయ్యండి
